Data Refresh: The command has been canceled << connection issue between power bi and azure sql

The scheduled refresh of the data coming from azure sql works fine for many months.
We didn't change anything in the data model in power bi and azure sql, nor there were any changes for any logins or security settings.

Since yesterday (27 July 2018) the data refresh always stops with an OLEDB/ODBC error. If you manually start the refresh again it stops with the same error. The table name where the error occurs is changing but thru SQL Mgmt Studio the table content is readable without any problem. Also manually refreshing the model with PowerBI Desktop (!) ends in the same result.

There must be a temporary issue in the data connection between Power BI and Azure SQL, which unfortunately cannot be reproduced with SQL Mgmt Studio. Thru this connection everything just works fine.

It's an issue, which the teams from Power BI and Azure SQL have to address together.
Thank you.

Michael

The issue has been resolved with the support from Azure.

The root cause was an arithmetic overflow in a view, which is used in the model.

Urgent Suggestion

It would be nice, if PowerBI failures would propagate the underlying SQL error messages...
This would simplify the investigations on data refresh issues...

Hi @ibax,

You can share your feedback here: https://ideas.powerbi.com/forums/265200-power-bi-ideas

As the issue is resolved, may I close this thread?

Dear Qiuyun

You may close this thread.

But could you please take along the improvement suggestion for Power BI

to propagate the full SQL Error messages (Number/Text) of data refresh
into the Power BI error messages ?

BTW: the propagation for other products like SSAS tabular/multidimensional, PowerPivot and PowerQuery is also missing. It would be of great help to investigate processing errors in those products, if the underlying SQL error message would be fully carried forward/integrated in the resulting processing errors.

Cheers

Michael
