Accumulating Snapshop Fact Table - update?

Hi,

I have a process which runs from a pre-state to a final-state. Commonly this would be modeled with an accumulating snapshot fact table.

Now I am asking wether I build to columns in the fact table, one for pre-state and one for final-state or is is allowed to build just one state column and update the state in place?
