Service refresh fails: The 'ABCD' column does not exist in the rowset

I am connecting to an ODBC data source via Gateway.
I have a "SELECT * FROM Table t" query.
When any column is removed from the data source Table, the refresh in the Service fails with this error:
The 'ABCD' column does not exist in the rowset.
I am NOT referencing this column anywhere in my Power Query nor in my Model nor in the Reports / Measures.
The problem occurs even if a new column was added to the data source, then a refresh in the Service happened (successfully), and then the new column was removed - then the refresh fails.
Moreover, the refresh in the Desktop works fine, even after a column is removed from the original Table.
I need the query to be SELECT *, I cannot specify specific columns.
And it works fine in the Desktop.
Is this a bug? What is a workaround?

No. I tried a lot. I've opened a ticket and made sure it escalates to the R&D team. They say this is by design. The only way is to refresh in the Desktop....

Did you ever get resolution to this issue without having to re-publish the report & dataset?

Hi @iBusinessBI ,

You can download the pbix file from the report page in Power BI Service, then open in Power BI Desktop to check which visual is broken in Visual pane or which column is created with incorrected syntax in Fields pane . Then you can determine if add to the visuals or not.

There are similar cases you can refer to :https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Service/The-column-does-not-exist-in-the-rowset/td-p/327629 , https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Service/The-HasUniqueRoleAssignments-column-does-not-exist-in-the-r....

You can also resolve the issue via the troubleshooting link :https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/refresh-troubleshooting-refresh-scenarios.

@v-rongtiep-msft
I've seen these posts.

This is not my issue. All my visuals are working and the column is not mentioned anywhere in the Power Query.

It is the column I am not using at all, but I don't want to specify the columns I need, I still want to do:

SELECT *
