Power BI - error with "Viewer" access role in Power BI Service

Hi all,

I wanted to raise an issue that I’ve encountered with the “Viewer” access role in a Power BI workspace for my organisation – whereby those users identified as having “Viewer” access are unable to see any data within the workspace’s reports, and are instead faced with the below error message on each of the reports’ visualisations:

Power BI Viewer error 1.pngPower BI Viewer error 2.png

When I change the users’ access to “Contributor”, “Member” or “Admin” they are able to see the data just fine – it is only as a “Viewer” that this issue applies. While I can make these users “Contributors” as a short-term workaround so that they can still see the data, I’d rather them not be able to edit or delete content, only to view it.

One thing I did notice is that the link contained within the error message takes me to this Microsoft page, relating to row-level security:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-admin-rls

Now while I do have three different levels of row-level security set up in the underlying Power BI dataset within this workspace, I do not actually have any users currently applied to them. As such,  my understanding was that users should have a full, unfiltered view of the data when not applied to any row-level security groups – so it doesn’t seem to me that this would be the reason behind the error?

Would really appreciate it if anybody could advise over this or has spotted something that I’ve missed…. please let me know if you’ve any questions or require any additional information.

Many thanks,

Hi @Anonymous ,

Current RLS only enabled on read permission users, you need to assign role to users to enable RLS effect. If you not assign detail roles to these users, they can't view correspond contents.
For edit permission users, RLS not work so they can view all records.
