Dynamics 365 Security Roles in PowerBI

Hi,

I am trying to understand how data access (viewing rights) on PowerBI Dashboards, published in Dynamics 365, are handled. Data Access in Dynamics is limited to the security role a user has. So if I create a Dashboard in Dynamics, a user is restricted to see only those data points limited to the security role of that user.

If I publish a PowerBI Dashboard in Dynamics, based on the same entity tables through the connection: "Dynamics 365 (online)" , will a user as well be resticted to see only the data in that PowerBI Dashboard, based the security role of that user?
Example: Multiple emploees have access to a PowerBI Sales Dashboard in Dynamics365 CRM, but each user should only be able to see his/her own sales data.

If the security roles of Dynamics are not taken into consideraion in a published PowerBI Dashboard, how would one go about setting this up?

Thanks!

Hi All,

I notice that this post is over a year old and given the updates on a regular basis for Power BI I just wonder if this situation has changed? i.e. Can we import/mirror/link to D365 security roles so that users of D365 will only see their own specific data scope?

Or is the given solution by @v-cherch-msft still the only option?

thanks in advance for your time

Kind regards

John 🙂

Hi @Anonymous

You may try to connect to Dynamics 365 in Power BI desktop follow this article: Use Power BI Desktop to connect directly to your Microsoft Dynamics 365 (online) instance.

After import data to desktop, you can create RLS role and utilize the role after publish to service, for more information, see: Row-level security (RLS) with Power BI. With RLS defined on Power BI side, each time user access the report will be applied.

Thanks Cherie Chen, in other words the security roles from Dynamics will not be applied to PowerBI. I need to define seperate roles in BI and assign them to Dynamic users? Does that also mean I have to define a seperate security role via RLS for each sales person in a group, so that they can only see their own data? That seems a bit cumbersome.
