Can't even get started with PowerBI.com and Snowflake

Snowflake does not appear as an option when adding a dataset to my workspace (pro trial). I only have four options:

Azure SQL Database

Azure SQL Data Warehouse

SSAS

Spark Azure HDInsight

I thought I would have a *lot* of options here. I also looked for it in apps and couldn't find it. Everything I search for sends me to an article on PowerBI Desktop (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/desktop-connect-snowflake) which doesn't seem applicable.

How can I connect PowerBI.com to Snowflake, or is PowerBI Desktop my only option for running reports using Snowflake?

Hi @Anonymous ,

Before connect to Snowflake in power bi service, you should contact your tenant administrator to enable 'Snowflake SSO' in Admin portal first:

snowflake SSO.png

If you're interested in configuring AAD integration, as well as optionally enabling SSO:

  • If you are the Snowflake admin, please read the Power BI SSO to Snowflake - Getting Started article in the Snowflake documentation.
  • (SSO) If you are a Power BI admin, look at the 'Power BI Service configuration - Admin Portal' section
  • (SSO) If you are a Power BI dataset creator, look at the 'Power BI Service configuration - Enabling a dataset' section

Please refer this document: Connecting to Snowflake in Power BI Service

In addition, when using the way like your mentioned to connect to dataset in power bi service, it will remind you to download power bi desktop to connect in it except SSAS. So we suggest you have better use power bi desktop to connect to datasets to create reports and publish to power bi service to browse.

Hi there

When connecting to data sources the best practice is to use Power BI Desktop which has got over 100 connectors.

There is a very limited amount of connectors in the Power BI Service, which is what you showed.
