Upgrading to latest release - missing Upgrade option

Hi,

I'm currently trying to upgrade a PBI Report Server (15.0.1108.297, MAY 2022, Enterprise) to the latest

release - January 2023 (also tried Sept 2022, however same error as below).

When running the installer, i'm welcomed by the expected Microsoft Power BI Report Server (January 2023) version header,

however the dialog is only offering Install Power BI Report Server and not the Upgrade Power BI Report Server option as described here:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/report-server/upgrade .

This is not expected right with an existing installation?

Seems like it has an issue detecting the current installation, nothing i can remeber from a previous upgrade that i did to May 2022 as far as i remember.

My PBI reportserver installation directory is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Power BI Report Server
with following folder PBIRS, PBIRS.OLD, Shared Tools.

How can i upgrade my version?

Thanks!

I just did the install routine - seems like it upgraded my installation.

Have not noticed any issue currently.

Ok - so i have compare prod and test environment.

Executed PBI Report Server installation media on prod and it surprisingly offered

me the Upgrade PBI Report Server option instead of Install.

Both PBI Report Server Installations look the same from a first point of view including installation directory, version etc. However - i upgrade to SQL Server 2022 on the dev machine! Im not sure but quite optimistic that

this is breaking the Upgrade option.

Can anyone confirm?

What is my option now ? Probably just reinstalling and keeping the report server databaeses etc.

Fine for me if its just that.

Hi @RS_PBI

Thanks for reporting the issue

We start looking into it now.

To clarify - you see the Upgrade option in your PROD environment, but not in Dev environment.

And the difference between two environments is that Dev also has SQL Server 2022 installed?

Does it have SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) installed?

Does your PROD environment have any of these installed as well?

Thanks @v-alipat.

Exactly.

Not also. I upgraded SQL Server 2019 in Dev to SQL Server 2022.

In Prod SQL Server 2019 is still running.

Does it have SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) installed?

SSRS has not been installed in Dev, Prod.

Does your PROD environment have any of these installed as well?

No SSRS installed in Prod.

Let me know if i can help with any further information.

Happy to help.

Thanks

@freginier - As far as I need there is only one installation media for Power BI Reportserver (PowerBIReportServer.exe) available, e.g. PBI downloads Jan 2023

For PBI Desktop one can select 32bit and 64 bit versions, but they are not relevant for the upgrade of the Power BI Reportserver.
