Does anyone know if it is possible to conditionally invert the y-axis range of a waterfall chart? I have a waterfall chart where the Category is filtered by a slicer. Depending on the slicer selection, it can sometimes be that all the Totals on the chart Category are negative. This tends to look a bit weird unless I invert the Y-axis range.
Is there a way to do this conditionally? I don't see an fx next to the "Invert range" toggle switch. I tried just setting the Y-Axis minimum higher than the maximum, but that didn't work. Only "solution" I can think of is to have a measure for the waterfall chart value where the logic is to multiply by -1 when all totals are negative, but that doesn't really make sense either. That would result in my expense values being positive in my waterfall chart, while all my other charts account for those expenses as negative. I'd like to keep things in the same direction.
Does anyone have any insight on this? Thank you!
Hi @Anonymous ,
I'm a little confused about your needs, Could you please explain them further? It would be good to provide a screenshot of the results you are expecting and desensitized example data.
Thanks for your efforts & time in advance.

Sure, here is some sample data for a waterfall chart:
Start Date | Scenario | Division | Revenue Type | Revenue |
3/31/2022 | Positive | Div 1 | Non-Interest Revenue | 100 |
3/31/2022 | Positive | Div 2 | Non-Interest Revenue | 423 |
3/31/2022 | Positive | Div 3 | Non-Interest Revenue | 321 |
3/31/2022 | Positive | Div 4 | Non-Interest Revenue | 58 |
3/31/2022 | Positive | Div 1 | Interest Revenue | 42 |
3/31/2022 | Positive | Div 2 | Interest Revenue | 93 |
3/31/2022 | Positive | Div 3 | Interest Revenue | 24 |
3/31/2022 | Positive | Div 4 | Interest Revenue | 102 |
3/31/2022 | Positive | Div 1 | Expense | -129 |
3/31/2022 | Positive | Div 2 | Expense | -432 |
3/31/2022 | Positive | Div 3 | Expense | -312 |
3/31/2022 | Positive | Div 4 | Expense | -49 |
6/30/2022 | Positive | Div 1 | Non-Interest Revenue | 195.2601 |
6/30/2022 | Positive | Div 2 | Non-Interest Revenue | 781.7311 |
6/30/2022 | Positive | Div 3 | Non-Interest Revenue | 442.788 |
6/30/2022 | Positive | Div 4 | Non-Interest Revenue | 84.79837 |
6/30/2022 | Positive | Div 1 | Interest Revenue | 48.79436 |
6/30/2022 | Positive | Div 2 | Interest Revenue | 126.3852 |
6/30/2022 | Positive | Div 3 | Interest Revenue | 40.99197 |
6/30/2022 | Positive | Div 4 | Interest Revenue | 192.7853 |
6/30/2022 | Positive | Div 1 | Expense | -151.126 |
6/30/2022 | Positive | Div 2 | Expense | -719.833 |
6/30/2022 | Positive | Div 3 | Expense | -327.131 |
6/30/2022 | Positive | Div 4 | Expense | -53.2674 |
I would filter the waterfall chart using the Revenue Type field.
Here is the standard waterfall chart state (both totals are positive):
Here is what happens if I select "Expenses" as my Revenue Type - both totals become negative, and the totals:
Here is what happens if I go to waterfall chart y-axis settings and "Invert Range" for "Expenses" - the chart looks better:
I want my waterfall chart to automatically invert the axes when it sees that both totals are negative. I cannot have a workaround like putting a bookmark over the "Expenses" slicer that takes me to a visual with an inverted axis, because it won't work if I select "Expenses" and "Non-Interest Revenue" together.
Hope this clears up what I'm asking for. Is there any way to have that "Invert Axis" be done conditionally? The waterfall chart is much better when all the totals come up from the bottom x-axis, all the time. I'm not seeing an "fx" button next to the toggle switch, so it must not be a built in functionality - but maybe there is a workaround?
