Question: How to show the same collumn over multple tables in hierachy.

Hi all,

So the title is a bit wierd, I know. I got the following problem:

I have 3 tables:

- Features

- User Stories

- Tasks

The relationships are as follows:

Features 1--* User Stories

User Stories 1--* Tasks

The tables have the following collumns (simplified)

Features:

- ID

- State (approved, completed, removed, etc)

- Name

User Stories:

- Parent ID (Feature ID)

- ID

- State

- Name

Tasks:

- Parent ID (User Story ID)

- ID

- State

- Name

I want to make a graphic that shows the "State" for all items. Currently that would mean the following items:

- Name (Feature)

- Name (Story)

- Name (Task)

- State (Feature)

- State (Story)

- State (Task)

Now this can become very confusing in a table of matrix. So I want to only have a single "State".

I tried making a new table with only "State", but it is impossible to make the realtionships because the other tables are already in relationships.

Is there some sort of lookup feature I can use, or is this impossible in powerBI?

Hi @FlorianCappers,

I am able to achieve what you were asking for. PFB screenshot showing both Matrix as well as Table with the data of your interestfix.PNG

Click here for the PBI file with the data model...Hope this fixes your problem!!!

Hi, this is what I have now. But what I would like to have is a single collumn of "State"

image.png

So that you would see that A is ApprovedA2 is Completed and B3 is Removed

Because having all these collumn can be confusing to the users.

Hi @FlorianCappers,

But what I would like to have is a single collumn of "State"

So that you would see that A is Approved , A2 is Completed and B3 is Removed

Why "A is Approved , A2 is Completed and B3 is Removed"? Could you please provide more description? And what is your desired output? Could you please show us a screenshot?

Hi @FlorianCappers,

A Feature has multiple User Stories, and a User Story has multiple Tasks.

A Feature, User Story and Task all have a property : State (Open, Closed, On Hold, etc)

I tried making a State table and reference it, but because the 3 other tables are in relatioship to eachother PowerBI cant make the relationship.

I was not very clear about your requirement. Would you please provide some dummy data to illustrate your desired result?
