Hi  there,

I need to connect SQL Server databases(on premise) to Power BI Desktop. Whether, I need to install enterprise gateway on-premise or my laptop?

I connect to these fairly often.  You can just directly connect to it through your Power BI Desktop using the "Get Data" button.

When you publish to Power BI Web, thats where you will need to consider what Gateway you wish to use.  I personally use the On-Premise data gateway.  We have a server internally which i have set up for that.  Once thats online, you just add the data sources into the "Manage Gateway" section of Power BI.
