How do I update Power Bi Desktop?

Hi there

I must say I do feel like an idiot asking this. I have power bi desktop open. When I go to Help > About I see that I'm running Version: 2.73.5586.561 64-bit (September 2019). So... can anyone please tell me where the magical update button is? How do I update the desktop version?

If the answer is honestly, go and get the latest installation file. Well, then do I simply close Power Bi Desktop and run the .exe without having to uninstall the prior version first?

Thanks in advance,

Michelle

Usually there is a little pop-up that happens when you open telling you that there is an update (non Store version) but I haven't run that version for so long I don't know.

And yes, just close Power BI, run the download to install, it will overwrite it. September 2019, are you running a RS version?

Hi Greg, thanks for your reply. Just ran the installation over the top. What is an RS version?

Report Server edition. Special version that works with the corresponding version of Power BI Report Server. It only gets released quarterly and I recal that September 2019 was a popular version so I was just curious and was going to point out that you need to make sure that your Power BI Report Server and Desktop version are in sync.

Goodness Greg... I'm just getting out the starting blocks here. As in, I've just updated powerbi and am feeling pretty good about it. hahah. I only have powerbi desktop installed, not any "power bi report server". I've managed to publish a little visualsation "to the cloud" which I imagine is the little Azure space just for me which comes with my Microsoft account.

If I take a guess - - is "Power BI Report Server" something I would buy and install on our local network and then I wouldn't have to publish to azure?

Goodness the learning curve in front of me... foof!

@michellepace you can download from the powerbi.com site or if you install from Microsoft Store, it will auto-update and it is the recommended method.
