Hello folks,
We have a Power BI developer who published multiple datasets and reports/dashboards to his personal workspace and some of them in Production usage by end users. The developer will leave the company in couple of weeks and we are planning to convert his personal workspace to Premium capacity and make couple of other developers as Owners/admins. This way all the datasets and reports will be converted to Premium and no change to reports URL used in Production.
Our biggest concern is will the workspace although converted to Premium capacity be obsolete once the developer account gets inactive/deleted from the company. We would ideally like to continue to run the production reports without disruption and also no change to reports URL. The last option if the premium workspace tied to developer's personal worskpace would gets inactive is to republish all contents sitting in his desktop to new app/Premium workspaces, but this would mean new reports URL's will be created and have to be passed on to end users.
If someone has experienced this, please share your thoughts or possible other options to consider.
Thanks !
Hi. I don't think you even can do that (you can't make a personal workspace premium). Personal workspaces are just for individual tests. You have to move everything to a workspace. If you want to avoid download and republish you can try duplicating workspaces with powershell cmdlets. He is a blog post of power bi about this:

Hope this helps,

Our tenant admin could convert personal workspace to Premium and it worked well.
Regarding the duplicate workspace you mentioned, does it copy everything and creates a new ID for the workspace ? If so, it creates a totally new URL and since all reports are in production, we dont want to disrupt the usage of old reports running from previous workspace.
Any other suggestions ??
It should copy all. Yes it will create a new id and new urls for every item. However consider this is a migration, you need to change things like reshare reports, dashboards, apps. Working with personal workspace it's a terrible idea. The regular workspaces are a collaborative space of work with multiple admins. The personal workspace or "My Workspace" is a one account work and administration. Even if it's a bit more work for you now, it's going to avoid a lot of problems in the future.

Make sure your premium workspace is v2. Bad things will happen when the last admin of a v1 Premium workspace leaves.
In our company we enforce a "minimum two live admins" policy for all v1 and v2 workspaces. Not strictly required for v2, but good policy nevertheless for BCP. Note: admins do not need to have a PRO license at all times.
Shaking my fist at Teams - why do they create NEW v1 workspaces?!?
