Issue in refresh of usage metrics report

I have created a custom usage metric report and removed the filter from ReportGuid to include data from all reports in that workspace. However, it it showing me the Guids and report names (in Display Name dimension) even after the reports have been deleted from that workspace and my usage metric report has been refreshed (as it gets refreshed daily). I am not sure why the previosuly deleted report names are still visible in my report?

Also, in microsoft documentation, it is mentioned that Power BI automatically creates a Usage Metrics Report dataset and we can update the credentials for it. However, I am not able to view the same in my workspace. Could anyone tell where can we find this dataset in power BI service or it would just be visible when we try to connect it to Power BI desktop?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or clarification.

Bumping because I have a similar concern. When I look at the total of reports using the DistinctCount of Display Name I get 74 but when looking at the same aggregation for ReportGUID I get 128?

@Swati_Chandak

To find the Usage Metrics Report dataset, follow the below steps:

  1. Navigate to workspace > click on settings at the top nav bar > click on settings again > click on datasets
  2. Now you should see list of all of your datasets in that workspace
  3. Now look for the dataset named Usage Metrics Report
  4. You can edit credentials for this dataset like you do with any other datasets and perform few other actions

Hello @_sfrost ,

Thanks for your quick reponse. Actually I have already followed these steps, but not able to find under datasets tab. Am I mssing something here?

@Swati_Chandak

Are you looking for the dataset in the same workspace where you have generated your usage metrics? Or is it a different workspace and you copied it to a different workspace?

I am looking for the dataset in the same workspace.

@Swati_Chandak

Can you generate usage metrics for any report in the same workspace and check if you see the dataset? Generating usage metrics again should create the dataset.

It's somehow not working for me. I can see the datasets only for the generic reports present in that workspace, not for usage metrics reports created.

@Swati_Chandak One final check! Could it be that you are looking for the dataset in classic workspace? Because that's the only place where we do not see the usage metric dataset as far as I'm aware.

Hi @_sfrost , Thanks. This might be the case. One quick thing, since I am not an admin of that workspace, I am not able to see workspace settings. Is there a way I can verify that it is a classic workspace?

@Swati_Chandak

One way is to go to workspace > click on settings at top nav bar > view content pack

If it takes you to a different page and documentation, you are in a modern workspace.

If it shows any content packs or says you don't have any content packs, yoh are in classic workspace

Another way -> click on workspaces > search for your workspace name > click on ellipsis (three dots)

If you see 5 options > you are in classic workspace

If you see 2 > you are in modern workspace

It shows you don't have any content packs. That means classic workspace and that is why not able to view dataset. Thanks for your quick clarifications. This was quite helpful.

Is there any issue with the refresh activity also in classic workspace?

@Swati_Chandak You could be still seeing those old reports because the usage metrics data is stored for 90 days!

I'm not sure. Just assumption!

You can check with support team if that's what is happening here.
