Embedded PBI report in 3rd party application not working for Power BI free user. (Premium capacity)

Hello ,

My organisation has a premium capacity.

The requirement is to embed power BI reports in a 3rd part application and  All power BI free users should be able to access the embedded reports in the 3rd party application.

I find that free users are able to acess the embedded reports only when given 'member' access workspace containing the underlying power BI dataset.  This is not ideal. I don't want to give member workspace access to free users.

What minimum permissions are required for a free power bi user to be able to access the embedded reports thrid party application ? Is the issue related to API used in the 3rd party tool while connecting to power bi ?

Please advise.

Thanks

Hello @TomMartens

Thank you for your reply. It got me thinking. Now we have shifted from "embed for your customers" to "embed for your organisation"which i agree is more appropriate for our use.

Now it seems to be working as expected. Power BI free users in the organisation can now access reports embedded in third party application; the same way they can access the reports in power Bi service.

Thanks once again ! 🙂

Hey @KV_PowerBI,

from my understanding, you are looking "Embedding for you customers." This article explains the differences and also provides some guidance: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/javascript/api/overview/powerbi/embedding-solutions

Hopefully, this helps to tackle your challenge.

Regards,

Tom

Hello @TomMartens ,

Thank you for your response.

We are indeed looking at "Embedding for you customers." option.  And Azure AD app's service principal object authenticates the embedded solution app against Power BI.

However the issue we face is that we need the Power BI free users also to be able to access the embedded content 'without being given a Member access ' to the workspace which houses the reports and dataset .

Please note; these users have been given access to the reports in power bi service and read access into the dataset.

In this scenario, is there a way for PBI free users to be able to access the embedded reports without being given workspace member access ?

Thanks

Hey @KV_PowerBI ,

I do not understand why you did this:

According to this article (The embed for your customers solution allows you to build an app that uses non-interactive authentication against Power BI. Your customers are likely to be external users, and they don't need to sign in using Power BI credentials to view the embedded content.):
The embed for your customers solution allows you to build an app that uses non-interactive authentication against Power BI. Your customers are likely to be external users, and they don't need to sign in using Power BI credentials to view the embedded content.

And there is also this article about implementing security features in an embedded solution: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/developer/embedded/embedded-row-level-security

What is your capacity?

Tom

Hello @TomMartens

Thank you for your reply. It got me thinking and we have now moved to 'Embed for your organisation' as it is more appropriate in our scenario.

We have a premium capacity and now the PBI free users are able to view the embedded reports that they have access to in PBI service,

Issue is solved . Thanks once again !!

Best Regards
