Confused with trying to embed a report.

I am trying to embed a report I made onto my companies internal website. The users that will be viewing the report will not have a Power BI Pro account, and the data is private, so I cannot share to web. I have tried for days to get an AAD Token, but am very confused about the process as well if its what I even need.

I have generated an embed token easily enough using Powershell ISE. The problem is that the token deactivates after an hour and I have to refresh it manually. I also tried using a Visual Studio program to generate what I thought was an Azure Active Directory (AAD) token, but I got the same type of token that I did with Powershell.

Then I learned about a subscription service called Power BI Embed that looks like it does what I want, but it has an hourly cost associated with it.

I just want to confirm if an AAD token is what I want: auto refresh, unlimited hits, or if the Power BI Embed service is what I'd need.

Appreciate the help!

Hi there

If you want to embed the Power BI report into an existing application then you would have to either purchase a Power BI EM SKU or a Power BI A SKU.

The difference between the EM and A SKU is that the A SKU is an Azure resource, so you can start, pause and scale up and down as needed. With that comes a hourly cost. the EM SKU has a fixed monthly cost.

With regards to the token this is something that you will have to handle from your side.

Here is a good starting point for using Power BI Embedded

@GilbertQ
Thanks for your response. Are you able to link documentation or steps to go through either process? I have never heard of Power BI EM or A; is that Embed and Azure? I have stumbled across the linking for Power BI Embed that you provided, so I am a bit familair with that. However, I'm not sure how to start the process or which one is what I need for what I'm trying to accomplish. Furthermore, I'm not sure how to generate a key. I spent a lot of time reading documentation about generating a key only to find out that it was the wrong type of key. There has to be a better way than what I was doing.

@GilbertQ

I think the provided links answer my question. My takeaway is that if I want people without a Power BI account to view my reports that are showing on our internal private website, that I'd need the Power BI Embed service.

The second link provides enough information it seems to get started with it. Thank you for the clarifying responses.

No worries, it can be very confusing when starting out. Glad to assist
