can you change a date from text to date and not get an error

I connectedt fo a file in My SQL from Power BI.  The My SQL table shows the date as VARCHAR but the ogiginal source showed it as a date.  Why can't I change type in Power BI to "date"?  it give me an error:

@Anonymous Pl. change the data to Date/Time/Timezone in powerquery window
