Publish Reports from Desktop using a Direct Connection to AWS

Hello!

Before I continue wasting time trying to figure this out, I wanted to check here to see if what I'm trying to do is even possible.

I am working in Power BI desktop. I have connected to an AWS SQL Server using Direct Connection.

What I'm looking to do is to publish a report that updates as the SQL server does so the report displays the most current data. I did direct connect rather than Import is because the database is millions of rows and grows by about 4,000 a day, so it takes forever to refresh the data when it's imported. That and I would have to manually refresh the data everyday for the report.

Right now, I'm getting a gateway connection error. "There is no gateway to access the data source XXX". I found the on-premises data gateway download.

Is this what I want? Is this even something that is possible?

I'm not great at network things and just trying to drag myself through this.

@KateThePhoenix yes you have to have gateway install on the same network where you can access the AWS SQL Server and from there it should be to configure the data source in the gateway in the cloud and you will be able to work with your database.

Preferred to installed Enterprise gateway on a machine (like a server) which is running 24x7, I see people install the gateway on their laptops and once it is turned off, you cannot refresh your dataset, in your case if the gateway is not available, it will not work because of direct connection.

I would  Kudos if my solution helped. 👉 If you can spend time posting the question, you can also make efforts to give Kudos whoever helped to solve your problem. It is a token of appreciation!
