Power BI storage mode greyed out

Hello.

I have a semantic model published to my premium workspace.

I would like end users to consume this model via a Direct Query connection.  This part all works.

Currently there is a limitation (Warning) with Direct query connections using composite models when creating relationships.

Use low-cardinality columns in cross source group relationships: When you create a relationship across two different source groups, the columns participating in the relationship (also called the join columns) should have low cardinality, ideally 50,000 or less. This consideration applies to non-string key columns; for string key columns, see the following consideration

I was investigating using the import mode, but when i connect to my model from PBI desktop, the storage mode is greyed out.

In fact, when i connect my excel file to this model, the local excel file storage mode is Import, and i dont have the ability to change that either.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

I always thought we could change the storage mode to import, but could not change it back to Direct query.

But in my case, i cant change anything.

thanks

@PPStar  Try creating a dataflow and consume that in power bi desktop where you can add local datasource and can do changes to the existing dataflow data as well!

That is not an option. We want to use Semantic Model Direct Query / Live connection so users DONT make changes.

Do you know why the option is greyed out?
