I’m calling this one the ‘Zoomable Serpentine Timeline’. It was built in vega and I have a .pbix file linked below that includes the spec inside Deneb.
The serpentine shape can be an option for instances where an oblong canvas is either not possible or is not ideal (although this visual can do oblong as well). Like my Zoomable Packed Circles (https://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Data-Stories-Gallery/Where-is-Everybody/td-p/3566465), this visual incorporates a timer to facilitate zoom and fade animations, offering a technique beneficial for drill-down behavior and exploration. This example reveals a few text marks and icons upon zoom, corresponding to the user-selected node. Alternatively, you can render various mark types, axes, legends, etc., to provide additional insights into the selected node. The behavior and shape can be customized using many of the specification’s included signals.
Although there are only 5 nodes on this timeline, it can handle many more. Additionally, this visual could instead be used to create a linear process diagram (https://lnkd.in/eysBYrD5).
