Random Dataset Refresh Failure

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone is expiriencing random dataset refresh failures that started few days ago, for us from 3/30/2024.

Error : [SQLState 08S01] timeout expired

Data source error: [ValidateMarkupTags][ccon]DataSource.Error: ODBC: [ccon]ERROR [08S01] [Microsoft][Amazon Redshift] (10) Error occurred while trying to connect: [SQLState 08S01] timeout expired [/ccon]. DataSourceKind = [ccon]AmazonRedshift[/ccon]. DataSourcePath = [ccon]goldbach-atlas-cluster.cch0y7fcznlk.eu-west-1.redshift.amazonaws.com:5439;atlas[/ccon]. OdbcErrors = [ccon]#table({"SQLState", "NativeError", "Message"}, {})[/ccon]. [/ccon]. The exception was raised by the IDbCommand interface. Table: Status.

It happens quite randomly, all over our tenant.

Thank you

List of Azure Datacentar IP addresses was updated overnight and our refreshes started failing. After updating the list all was back to usual.

Hi, @MAndreaM

Based on the error message you provided, [SQLState 08S01] appears to be related to a timeout error. This typically indicates a network connectivity issue between Power BI and the Amazon Redshift instance. You can take the following steps to resolve this issue.

1. check the network connectivity to ensure that there are no intermittent network issues between Power BI and the Amazon Redshift cluster. (Check for any firewall rules or network policies that might be intermittently blocking or slowing down the connection.) Ensure that the gateway is installed and functioning properly. Consider optimising queries or reducing the amount of data being refreshed.

2. Excessive query execution times or resource contention on the Amazon Redshift cluster may cause timeouts. Check the cluster's performance metrics and query execution times during a refresh failure occurrence. If necessary, consider scaling the cluster or optimising queries.

3. Review the Power BI Service Runtime Status and check the Power BI Service Runtime Status dashboard to ensure that there are no ongoing issues with the Power BI service that could affect the dataset refresh (you can access the Service Runtime Status dashboard in the Power BI service).
