How to bypass not being able to modify dimensions

I've learned that having a live connection through a dataset comes with restrictions such as not being able to create a custom column due to storage restrictions however, there must be a way for me to use simple formulas that are used daily in excel such as filtering, concatenation, checking for equality, and after reading the DAX instructions I'm still stuck trying to figure out what I can or can't do in PBI.

For example, I managed to do a filter function that returns a Number amount, let's say is Sales Amount, based on a filter on a dimension, however, what if I want to simply look if Dimension1 == Dimension2, or if I want to exclude items that meet certain condition. Please let me know how I can bypass the storage requirement or how creative I need to be to be able to use dimensions not only measures in my formyulas?

Your help is appreciated, thank you!

Change the live connection to Direct Query with local data model. Then you can add columns as long as they are derived from contents in the same row.
