MFA was forced on, now power bi on-premise gateway doesn't work

I started getting a popup in power bi requiring Multi-factor auth to be enabled. So I did what it said, and immediately my on-premise gateway (which I logged into with my personal account when I set it up) stopped working for refreshes. It didn't help if I opened the gateway and logged in with my account again, and successfully completed the MFA - refreshes through the gateway still don't work.

I've spent three hours digging through the microsoft docs, 95% of them are wildly inaccurate and the rest are so complicated that I don't understand any of it. Meanwhile my entire organization's reports are not working.

Is there any help to be had here? How are you supposed to set up the gateway if MFA is now enforced? The error reported by the gateway is:

{"error":{"code":"DMTS_OAuthTokenRefreshFailedError","pbi.error":{"code":"DMTS_OAuthTokenRefreshFailedError","parameters":{"ConnectionDetails":"{\"kind\":\"PowerBI\",\"path\":\"PowerBI\"}","CredentialType":"OAuth2","DatasourceType":"Extension"},"details":[{"code":"DM_ErrorDetailNameCode_UnderlyingErrorMessage","detail":{"type":1,"value":"AADSTS50076: Due to a configuration change made by your administrator, or because you moved to a new location, you must use multi-factor authentication to access '00000009-0000-0000-c000-000000000000'.\r\nTrace ID: 4a80b1ed-738b-407c-b1b1-3f6e0dde1000\r\nCorrelation ID: 752c87fc-0eda-4da7-8daa-8dcaa754e4cd\r\nTimestamp: 2023-02-24 14:05:04Z"}},{"code":"DM_ErrorDetailNameCode_UnderlyingErrorMessage","detail":{"type":1,"value":"AADSTS50076: Due to a configuration change made by your administrator, or because you moved to a new location, you must use multi-factor authentication to access '00000009-0000-0000-c000-000000000000'.\r\nTrace ID: 4a80b1ed-738b-407c-b1b1-3f6e0dde1000\r\nCorrelation ID: 752c87fc-0eda-4da7-8daa-8dcaa754e4cd\r\nTimestamp: 2023-02-24 14:05:04Z"}},{"code":"DM_ErrorDetailNameCode_UnderlyingHResult","detail":{"type":1,"value":"-2146233088"}}],"exceptionCulprit":1}}} Table: xxx.

Also, when I look at my own user account on azure it still says MFA = disabled, even though it's enabled. I read about something called "app passwords" that I'm supposed to use, but I don't have that option when I attempt to follow the docs.
