Excel online file connected to a Power BI Dataset with RLS

Hello,

I created a dataset & report, where I defined RLS, with Power BI that I published in a workspace on Power BI Service.
I then connected this dataset to an Excel Online file that I deposed in my workspace.

When I add a user (as a viewer) in my workspace, and assign a role from my RLS to this viewer, RLS are applied correctly to the report and the viewer has a filter view of the data.

However, when he is using the Excel file, RLS don't work and he has access to all the data in the dataset.

Is anobody met this kind of problem ?

Thank you 🙂

Hi @gsoriot ,

Row-level security (RLS) with Power BI can be used to restrict data access for given users. Filters restrict data access at the row level only in Power BI report, and you can define filters within roles.

Based on your description, RLS can not work in your datasource.

Hi @v-tianyich-msft ,

Thank you for your answer, I guess it's a limitation of Power BI RLSand I'm not able to apply it to my Excel's file.

Hello @aj1973 ,

No attached limitations aren't applied to my case.
-> RLS a OK when viewers accessed to a Power BI report, but are KO (they can access to all the data) when they access to an Excel which is connected to my Power BI Dataset.

Remove all users from the workspace.

Go to Dataset and use Manage permission to give access to your users with Build permission.

Ask the user to use Excel to connect to the dataset.

Let me know
