Options for getting only preffered data before loading into power bi

Hi,

When creating power bi reports or dashboards, most of them are linked directly to the datawarehouse where we have full control over what query to write in order to get only data we need. But for some other reports there is from all of information available in the datawarehouse there is a managed dataset created that can be used for 2 different dashboards in power bi. But that dataset is connected via link direct query to both different dashboards. From the created managed dataset there are only some parts needed for one dashboard and also other parts needed for the other dashboard. What possible ways are there to load just the needed parts of the created managed dataset without having to make query changes or changes in power query and before it even having to load into power bi in order for only the needed parts of the managed dataset to be used for the power bi reports and dahsboards?

Hope to hear some insightful options.

Thanks you!

As I understand it you are already using Direct Query. No data is loaded into Power BI until the user interacts with the report pages and visuals.

Are you looking for the aggregation function?

Hi @lbendlin , im not sure if im understanding what the aggregation function is.

THe thinh is one create dataset is used for 2 different reports, but we dont want to change any of data already available in the created dataset, so what other option is there to use the same dataset but just take needed data from it before it loads into power bi?

When you connect to a Power BI dataset it may initially be a live connection. You can change that to a Direct Query connection with local model (link in bottom right).  That will also allow you to pick individual tables from the data model.  You can also rewire the data model if you want, by loading individual tables one by one.

Hmm i dont think this is the answer im looking for, because we don't want to change it to import mode.

Also when having a directquery connection, would using parameters maybe be of any help for this to only take what is needed from the created dataset and then only load that into the model?

Neither Import Mode nor parameters are relevant to this scenario.

So what could be relevant then?

Have you switched the live connection to direct query?

I thought that direct query is already live connection, what is the difference?

Live connection = you must use their data model, warts and all

Direct Query = you can use their data model but can also make adjustments and add measures (and row level columns)

Import Mode = the data is now yours, do with it what you want.

Ahh ok thanks for explaining it so simply

But no other solution for the asked problem is possible?

I am not sure there is an actual problem?
