Formula works to create measure but not column

I am looking to create a caculated column using the following formula ( based on two measures ) :

 

Cost = 
[MTD Cost]-[MTD Cost : PreviousDay]

This works when I create a measure, but doesnt work when I create a column - same formula. The error says a circular dependandcy was detected. Not sure how to avoid the circular dependancy.

short answer, include a column with a unique index in your table
