I have installed both SQL Server 2017 and Power BI desktop on my local workstation. I installed the Contoso, Northwind, and WideWorldImporters databases and can connect to them with SQL Server Management Studio and run queries.
When I try to connect with Power BI I am getting the following error.
I have checked and the database instance is configured to allow remote connections. I also edited the hosts file for both localhost and machine name. I can ping the port 1433 from comman line and windows powershell.
Best Regards,
Ramkumar
Try the latest version of Power BI Desktop and take a look at Troubleshoot Connecting to the SQL Server Database Engine.
