Automatic Refresh not displayed

I have a report I have built that is connected to a database through sql server.  I am trying to establish and automatic refresh that would refresh on a schedule.  I have read some articles and watched some videos on how to do this and it appears that my automatic refresh button is not displaying under the preview features menu in options.  Can someone point me in the right direction?

Hi @Dane

If you want to refresh in Service ,please refer to my reply above .

In Desktop , you can refresh in two place .

(1) Manual refresh in Desktop

(2) Place your mouse on the page, not on the visual, and then you can see the refresh setting in the Format settings. For specific operations, please refer to this link below .

Hi @Dane

What I need to make sure is, do you mean refresh in Desktop or in Service ?

(1)In Desktop : Automatic page refresh in Power BI enables your active report page to query for new data, at a predefined cadence, for DirectQuery sources . For specific introduction and operation, please refer to the link below .

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/create-reports/desktop-automatic-page-refresh

(2)In Service : Scheduled refresh needs to install standard gateway and configure datasource gateway . The following links introduce how to install and configure the gateway, you can refer to the following .

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/data-integration/gateway/service-gateway-install

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/data-integration/gateway/service-gateway-manage

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/service-gateway-enterprise-manage-sql

After you complete the gateway installation and data source configuration , you need to configure scheduled refresh in Service , you can refer to the link below .

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/refresh-scheduled-refresh

Thanks for your help.  I need it to refresh in both desktop and service.  In desktop I do not have the option for automatic refresh as shown in my screen shot below, this report uses SQL Server as its data source

If you want to schedule an update for your PBI dataset you have to do so in the Power BI Service. But before you do so you have to install the PBI gateway. Check out this info on how to do so.

https://www.sqlshack.com/setting-up-power-bi-data-gateway/

Afterwards you have to go to the Power BI service and select the "Schedule refresh" option on your published dataset. Check out this info on how to do it:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/refresh-scheduled-refresh
