Power BI App for Windows End of Life?

According to this blurb under "What's New" on the Microsoft Store, the app will no longer be updated after the end of the year.

https://apps.microsoft.com/store/detail/power-bi/9NBLGGGZLXN1

"After December 31, 2023 Microsoft will no longer provide fixes, updates, or technical assistance for this app. To keep on using Power BI, go to PowerBI.com."

Will the app continue to work after this date?

We heavilty utilize the non-interactive slideshow functionality to display live information on screens throughout our operations.

If this app stops working, will there be an alternative that offers the same slideshow functionality?

Hey @Greg_Deckler and @aaronhaviland ,

for the short-term, the app will continue to work after that date, but it will not accept any new updates and eventually, it will stop working.

The team is working on enabling slideshow support through Power BI add-in for PowerPoint, which we expect to have ready early next year. With Power BI add-in you will be able to utilize PowerPoint slideshow and infinite loop and integrate content from multiple reports and from additional sources in one presentation and slideshow.

Thanks. Maya

Hi @aaronhaviland,

Based off of the other answers here, I see a few options:

  • Keep using the Power BI viewer app until it's finally taken down - continue at your own risk, so to speak.
  • Build your own solution with concepts from Power BI embedded and the Power BI Javascript SDK. (LOTS OF WORK)
  • Wait and see if the upcoming Powerpoint feature solves your needs.

However, I've built a really advanced Power BI digital signage app for these needs called Displagent. Cross-platform, runs on Windows and works well on Raspberry Pis. I already have a lot of advanced features built out as well as a nice docsite.

I run Displagent solo, so happy to answer any questions or offer any help that I can.

We are happy to know that the Power BI add-in for Power point will be available in 2024Q1. However, we need to know that whether the current Power BI windows app will be supported with security patches till the above add-in is provided? Could you please mention the plans that are in place for the same?

@aaronhaviland Interesting. I think that is just a Windows 10 port of the Power BI Mobile app so I wonder if that has larger implications to the mobile app? I don't know of an equivalent for it. Probably still going to work after that date but you might have to go third-party like Power BI Robots. How to display Power BI reports and dashboards on a smart TV (devscope.net)
