Problem starting Power BI desktop

After downloading and installing, I executed from shortcut. Also, tried again.

Immediately the following error message comes up.

 

Something went wrong

There was an error reading the primary service from the application manifest.

 

Any clues?

You can maybe install it in 32-bit version. It will run on win-x64 too.

Hello,

 

The same problem for me. I just realized, it comes, when the folder name is the same than the file name. When I change the folder's name, it works again. (" " and "_" are consdered the same)

 

For example:

...\C01 report\C01_report.pbix does not work.

...\C01 report x\C01_report.pbix works.

 

I have the files in a sharepoint Sites's shared folder synchonized in Onedrve.

Replying to this old thread as it is the only record of this error I could find. Same exact message:

"Something went wrong"

"There was an error reading the primary service from the application manifest."

 

Almost seven years later and the same issue is still possible. In my instance, Power BI from MS Store has the issue (launches fine once, then breaks after first reboot). From further testing, the issue seems to be limited to one user profile on one computer. Whoever finds this thread next, consider that a Windows profile reset may be a viable fix.

I just wanted to comment that I started experiencing the same issue but only on a specific .pbip file. Every other .pbip & .pbix run fine. 

 

I can also copy and paste the entire project folder into another directory just one level higher and can run the problem file just fine. I'm wondering if it's some kind of pathing issue but not sure.

Hi @aldomoh,

 

Could you try running Power BI Desktop with administrator privilege to see if it can be launched successfully?

Running as administrator gives the same error message.

You can maybe install it in 32-bit version. It will run on win-x64 too.

That work! Using 32bit.

Reinstall it.

I did. Seem error message.
