Breakdown Trees

by fredrikheden Regular Visitor ‎09-23-2015 09:35 PM - edited ‎09-23-2015 09:39 PM

The Breakdown tree makes it possible to visually display the full drill-down path of a measure. By keeping all levels in the drill-down path visible you will get a good overview of how your numbers break down, from the top level to the details at the bottom.

I really like this one. This has a very practical use by showing the relationship of numbers and hierarchies. I also like how it is tied to the other charts. Definitely a winner for my kind of work.

Unique, engaging and thought provoking. Made me immediately start thinking of different applications as opposed to just being one of the expected future visuals, fantastic work!

dear colleagues, how do you test that wonderful thing? i tried to paste this code  directly to dev (https://github.com/fredrikheden/PowerBI-visuals/blob/master/src/Clients/Visuals/visuals/breakdownTre... tools online console but it failed. What did i missed? It seems like some sort of preparation is miising.

It seems that something has changed in the online dev editor, making some of the visuals not work right now online even though they compile fine and work in Visual Studio.

Hey Fredrik, would it be possible to update your code to not use IInterativeVisual & the interactivity service? That interface and API are internal. Instead you should use the SelectionManager class to avoid any backward compatibility issues. The way selection mananger works is very similar to the interactivilty service, where you give it the selection ID you are trying to select/drill. Refer to the AsterPlot visual under samples on how to use it. Let me know if you have any questions.

by fredrikheden Regular Visitor
on ‎09-27-2015 01:35 AM

@spatney: My code is now updated to use the SelectionManager instead. Thanks for pointing that out.

My fork is also updated to the latest Microsoft version so any problems with trying out the visual yourselves should be gone.

@JDE: Try to copy/paste the code again and I hope it works fine now.

@fredrikheden, (or anyone) @spatney ?

Can you do  a step-by-step on how you plug this thing into Power BI desktop.

I know there is this:

https://github.com/fredrikheden/PowerBI-visuals

&

Git +Node.js dependencies

Even have the core visualizations working in visual studio.....not bad for a gridhead if I don't say so myself but I don't see how to acctually use Breakdown tree in Power BI desktop.

@leonardmurphy any thoughts on this? Have a use case where I need to put this to work.

Hi,

I'm glad you like the Breakdown Tree visual. I've had a lot of requests to submit this one to the Power BI Visual Gallery. However, it utilizes some not-supported methods for integrating to the drill-down/up functionality of Power BI, which makes it hard to make this one a production ready official visual. For you who want to use it anyway (be ware of the known issues) I have added a pbiviz file to my git repository. Use the link below to download it.

Breakdown Tree, PBIVIZ file:

Awesome! Thank you! @fredrikheden fyi, @leonardmurphy I'll want to chat about this at a user group meetup session

Wonder if this is part of Microsoft's plan to drag Excel-wielding accountants into the world of app dev :-)

Hi Fredrik, I've just downloaded the PBIVIZ from https://github.com/fredrikheden/PowerBI-visuals/blob/master/BreakdownTree.pbiviz but am getting an error saying it is corrupt when trying to open it.  Can you please provide an updated, working copy?  Has there been any progress on getting this added to the Visuals Gallery?

Again one of the "hidden gems" in the community... PLEASE make this one available for us in the gallery and if there's anything missing from the PowerBI team we should push them to support it. This is really great, I'm with Microsoft BI from the very beginning and loved ProClarity with the decomposition tree... Now if it would be possible to dynamically chose the drill-down path (so with a right-click and then you can select what attribute you want to drill down next) that would be like heaven!

@TePe

Hi Sir,

It is one of the best Custom Visual that will give us more flexibility in Power BI canvas, moreover it will give us a dependencies diagram which we don’t have in Visuals gallery.

We need this in custom gallery badly and ASAP My votes is for this visual. Thank you!
