updating a dashboard daily - imported?

do you need a pro license to do updates daily on a power bi dashboard that gets refreshed from excel spreadsheets on your network?  I am assuming you would need to set up a gateway for that if you wanted to automate it, but would that mean it needs a pro license?

Hi @vanessafvg,

Correct. The Gateway is only required for on premise data. Even a database on Azure Cloud does not need the Gateway.

The free license update via OneDrive happens naturally. You should be able to schedule what time this occurs (although I didn't check). All users can view the changes as they are updated.

Regarding the Gateways, yes, all consumers including viewers must be a PRO user.

Till today, many organisations still manually refresh their Power BI Dashboards & Reports. Once IT realises how well O365 integrates with Power BI, it is a no brainer. There is no other enterprise BI product in the world today that has the capability of the Microsoft BI platform.

Cheers,

Dan

Hi @vanessafvg,

If your spreadsheets are stored on Office 365's OneDrive, then your dashboards will be automatically refreshed every day. No PRO license is required.

Otherwise you are correct, you will need the personal Gateway installed.

OneDrive is definitely the way to go.

Cheers,

Dan

hi

yes, unfortunately many organisations out there, specifically financial ones are very late to the cloud game and things like sharepoint and one drive are locked down due to fear of the cloud.

So what you saying is if your data is the the cloud, no gateway needed, if  you have on prem data in any shape or form then a gateway is required.  If you used a free license and only did a one update a day would it still be free via a scheduled update or is any dashboard requiring a gateway needing a power bi pro license and then would ever person accessing it need a pro license?
