does SharePoint Online use gateway even when not configured?

I have a report that sources and blends data from an on-prem SQL Server data warehouse and Excel files that reside in SharePoint Online.  I have not added the SharePoint site to the gateway.

I have been experiencing scheduled refresh failures for the past few days.  The gateway logs share errors like:

SharePoint: Request failed: The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send.

Why is the gateway showing anything about SharePoint, given I haven't added the site to the gateway?

Hi @Anonymous

If you are combining data from On-Prem and SharePoint online you will need to use the gateway for the refresh to work successfully.

Here are details on how to configure this in the Gateway: Merge or append on-premises and cloud data sources - Power BI | Microsoft Docs

@GilbertQ

I'm confused by the MS documentation on this scenario (in the link you provided).  Under Gateway Cluster Settings, I have activated the 'Allow user's cloud data sources to refresh through this gateway cluster...' option.  However, in the dataset itself, there is also an option for adding the SharePoint Online source to the gateway.  I have not added this source to the gateway.  Does this still imply that the PBI service is calling SharePoint Online through the gateway?

@Anonymous - when you merge data from On-Prem and SharePoint online the merge operation happen on your Gateway only thus you have to enable "Allow user's cloud data sources to refresh through this gateway cluster" option in Gateway setting.

If you want to SharePoint process not to run on gateway follow below steps

1. Create dataflow for On premise data using gateway connection

2. In your dataset replace onpremise source with Dataflow

Now your merge opration will be perfoemed online and you will not be requing to enable "Allow user's cloud data sources to refresh through this gateway cluster" option anymore.
