dataset refresh was successful but data was not updated

My dataset is in the PowerBi Service workspace. It is connected to a Sharepoint Excel online file which is updated daily. 

Looking at my data refresh history, it has been running successfully for a month but when looking at the data, the entries added/changed in the past month were not captured. It is still showing the data from 1 month ago. 

What do I fix to ensure that it captures changes?

For example:

1. How do you design your report? Direct get data on power bi service side or create on desktop side and publish to service?
2. Any external datasource connections in your excel workbook?(e.g  excel connect to sql)
