What Role is assigned to a User added to an App?

When you update your app in Service and go to Permissions you can add your consumers

Unlike in the App Workspace Access you dont assign the role like Owner, Contributor, Viewer etc

Im guessing that the role is automatic as is a Viewer since apps are for sharing with report consumers?

Am I right?

Yes, you are correct - they are basically a viewer.   They can consume the application but can not contribute the the workspace and are not members of the workspace (unless you have added them there too).   The will be able to see and interact with the application but will not be able to add any content to the workspace.  You can grant them access to the dataset under the application by granting them build permission.  Hope this helps.

Thanks!

@DebbieE
Basically, the app permission decides who has access to the app, and what they can do with it. It is separated with the roles of the workspace. This means, even if you are granted with app permission, you will not automatically assigned to any roles, so you still cannot access the workspace. But dataset can be available for you.

Therefore other than view and interact on the report in the app:

1. You can allow app users to connect to the app's underlying datasets by giving them Build permission. They'll see these datasets when they're searching for shared datasets. So you can only see the datasets in that workspace.

2. Users with Build permission can also have permission to copy reports from this app to another workspace. Read more about

Please refer Permission section: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-create-distribute-apps
