Visuals only load with users that are part of the workgroup

Hello all,

 

Since of this morning, visuals in my report only load with users that are a member of the work group.

Reports shared with users that arent part of the work group get an error saying the visual could not load. (http error 401)

 

This wasn't an issue before. 

 

Any advice/ideas?

Ok, so i figured out what went wrong, but i do think this is a bug.

 

I created a row level security rule, but didnt add any user to it, at the time i wasnt sure if i was going to use it. 

 

just now, i created another row level security rule but left it blank, so every user added to the rule would see all the data.

I added users to the rule. et voila, visuals are working again for those specific users. 

This also explains why i didnt had any problems with my other PBIX files. They didnt had row lvl security.

The only thing I find strange is that it did work before. I would not expect users that are not part of a workgroup to be able to see anything.

Any thoughts on what could generate the 401 error? 

My guess is that previously it was incorrectly displaying the visuals to people that should not be able to see them, and now it is correctly not displaying them to people who should not be able to see them. If someone shares a URL from a workgroup to another person who is not in the workgroup, the correct behaviour is to not show the visualisation. That may be an error code or something else.

What's also weird, is that this only happens on a certain dataset/PBIX file. my other datasets are working just fine.

 

So i guess the problem is related to that specific PBIX file.

 

Very annoying, cause this renders power BI useless to our organisation.

Maybe I am missing something here. I don't see how the software is useless if you share it with someone who

does not have access, and they can't see anything. What am I not understanding with your scenario?

I created a report,

i pinned some content to a dashboard,

then i shared the dashboard with user A.

Last week user A could see the dashboard and open the report, all visuals were shown.

 

Today, user A opens the report and sees a visual with the error: Could not open visual. (error 401).

If i open the same report, i can see the visual correctly.

 

Nothing changed in the PBIX file( well, something probably has changed, but i didnt do it 😉 )

I'm glad you sorted it out.  You more details description doesn't mention anything about workgroups.  Definitely anyone with a shared dashboard should continue to see what has been shared. RLS is an opt in model. So if you don't add any users, then they won't be able to see the data.
