Let's say I get a premium capacity so I can publish my paginated reports to. But I can't move my data to Azure at this point. If I want to use PBI gateway how exactly do I make my local servers "visible" to my datasets? At work I need to be connected via corporate VPN to make it work, but what about at home, without VPN? Please help.
Thanks

The Gateway should be able to communicate to source server so it is mandatory to install Power BI Gateway on a server within the network so it will not require VPN
To open port please refer
Adjust communication settings for the on-premises data gateway | Microsoft Docs

When setting up a specific connection it can be any URL? Do I need to open a specific port on my router?
I will look into these link, thanks. But I am still not clear on VPN. Does VPN require to use on-prem Gateway?
Gateway need to be configured on a server/system running 24*7 so that your report can be refreshed anytime, and once configured it can be accessed from anywhere to manage data sources from manage gateway option
To know more about Gateway I would suggest to go through below
On-premises data gateway - Power BI | Microsoft Docs
