System Requiremetns for On-Premises Data Gateway - Enterprise Mode

I am finding conlicting recommended settings for the hardware specs:

  •  8 CPU cores and 16-Gb RAM below:

          https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/power-bi-reports-performance#gateway-best-practices

  • 8 CPU cores and 8- Gb RAM below:

          https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-gateway-onprem#requirements

Both documents have been updated over a year ago. What should we go for in the initial cluster set up?

I am wondering if anyone can chime in and share what set up they currently have and if started with 8 cores+ 8 gb of RAM how soon did you have to scale up/out?

TIA!

Hey,

it depends on the workload of your gateway, if you are only using Direct Query or Live Connections 8GB may be sufficient.

If you are using the gateway for refresh of many imprted sources, I would recommend 16GB.

If your gateway is for both workload, gor for the 16GBs
Currently we are using 32GB of RAM without any issues for quite some time.

Hopefully this provides some additional insights.

Regards,

Tom
