Switching Dataset on PBI Service

Hi Guys,

On Power BI Service, is there any way to switch a dataset for a particular report without downloading the report and switching the source on PBI Desktop?

Thanks if anyone can help,

Gio

Hi @Anonymous ,

You can try to use Power BI REST APIs to update datasources.

Reference:

Updates the datasources of the specified dataset from "My Workspace";

Updates the datasources of the specified dataset from the specified workspace.

Note:

  • The original datasource and the new datasource must have the exact same schema.
  • For cached models, the dataset must be refreshed to get the data from the new datasources. Wait 30 minutes for the update datasources operation to complete before refreshing.

Restrictions:

  • Update datasources supports the following datasource types:
    • SQL Server
    • Azure SQL Server
    • Analysis Services
    • Azure Analysis Services
    • OData Feed
    • SharePoint
    • Oracle
    • Teradata
    • SapHana
For other datasource types, use Update Parameters In Group.
  • Changing datasource type is not supported.
  • Datasources that contain parameters on the connection string are not supported.
  • Datasources which are part of Merged or Joined tables are not supported.

Hello Gio,

I don't think so you can change the datasets in Power BI Service but you can jump from one report to another report in the same Power BI service workspace or app. In order to do so, you can use the cross-report drillthrough in Power BI. For more information about the cross-report drillthrough check out this article in Microsoft docs

Thanks,

Piyush
