SmartSheet as a Power BI Service Data Source (and how to schedule refresh)

Hello All. Cuirous if anyone can help me with the following?

Background: I created a report in Power BI Desktop that contains data sfrom a couple of Excel sheets (not required to be updated on any frequency) and data from two worksheets within SmartSheet. The data in the SmartSheet worksheets is updated periodically by users in SmartSheet. I then suck that data into Power BI for use in my report. I have published the report to Power BI Service so that other individuals in my organization can view the information. Its all working pretty well and we are happy with the results thus far.

Problem/Issue: I would like to schedule the refresh of the SmartSheet data. Right now, I have to manually refresh in Power BI Desktop and then re-publish to Power BI Service. Is there a way to establish the SmartSheet worksheet dataset in Power BI Service? And then configure to refresh on a scheduled basis? From what I have read, I dont think I need a gateway or anthing to do this but I could be wrong.

Note: I have seen a few other posts regarding this on the Community, however I am not seeing the functionality/configurations mentioned in those posts currently in Power BI Service. So I think there amy have been an update to Service since those original posts were created.

Any insight or help would be much appreciated! Thank you!!

Hi jyeager,

Yes, if your data source is local source, you need a on-premises data gateway or personal gateway. About how to install and configure data gateway, Please refer to documentation: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-gateway-onprem. In addtion, after gateway installed, to set schedule refresh in power bi service, select the ellipsis (...) next to a dataset listed under Datasets then Select Schedule Refresh. Please refer to: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/refresh-scheduled-refresh.

Thank you for the response and help! The data source I am concerned with is a cloud source (smartsheet.com), so I dont think I need the on-premise data gateway. Is there a way to link to a cloud data source directly and configure a scheduled refresh?
