Share reports outside organization with edit rights

We want to share our dashboards and reports to our customers and give them the ability to make (small) front-end and layout changes (on a copy).

I shared an app with external users, but they can not work from that one. (you never can with apps I guess)

The way you share a content pack with someone within your organization is exactly what we are looking for, but then with external users.

I've read something about a template-content-pack. Is this the (only) way to go?

If so, what about the announcement that content packs will be replaced with apps?

Please advice me what's the best approach if you want to share editable reports outside your organization.
(each customers has it's own db on our azure sql where we can open up some view for these customers, for these reports)

Best regards and thx already for answering on my first post in the powerbi.com community,
Dirk

Hi @dirko,

First, we can not publish content pack outside your organization, please vote this feature request.

Second, a template-content-pack is a part of developer of Power BI. And I am not an expert in the area, you'd better post template-content-pack  related problem to Power BI developer community.

>>If so, what about the announcement that content packs will be replaced with apps?

Apps are an evolution and simplification of content packs. There are a few major differences.

  • Once installed, content packs lose their grouped identity. The end users just see a list of dashboards and reports. Apps, on the other hand, maintain their grouping and identity even after installation. This makes it very easy for end users to navigate content over time.
  • You can create multiple content packs from any workspace. But apps are 1:1 with workspaces. We believe that this change will make apps easier to understand and maintain over the long run.

More details, please review this article: Distribute to large audiences with Power BI apps.

Best Regards,
Angelia

hello @v-huizhn-msft

Is this still valid ? We are not allowed to share a report (Power BI link) with an external adress of our organization ? What about sharing edit rights with internal adresses ? They will be allowed to edit the content ? Thank you
