Schedule refresh from a Sharepoint excel file

Hello!

I had a (hopefully) quick question, and I hope it makes sense.

Background: I've been working in an excel file on my computer for a few weeks and now I would like to start creating my dashboard on Power BI (desktop). When my excel file gets officially approved, I will be sharing it to my company's Sharepoint for others to access/edit. Once the dashboard has been created, I need to publish it to PBI Service and then I plan to set up a scheduled refresh once the excel file is in Sharepoint.

So my question: Can I start my PBI dashboard by pulling data from the excel file on my desktop, then later download the file to Sharepoint and schedule a refresh from there?

Thank you!

Hi @sy898661,

Based on my test, due to the data source in the report is your local file, not the file in the SharePoint online, though you set the schedule refresh for the dataset, it retrieves data from local Excel instead of SharePoint Excel file.  If you want to set the schedule refresh to retrieve data from SharePoint Excel, I suggest you to refer to below steps:

1.Upload your excel file to the SharePoint online

2.Create a report in Power BI desktop by getting this file in SharePoint online. Reference: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/desktop-use-onedrive-business-links

3.Publish the report to the service and you can set the schedule refresh. Reference: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/refresh-csv-file-onedrive#what-are-the-advantages

Hi Daniel,

Thank you so much! I will definitely share it to Sharepoint first. And thank you for including reference websites, you rock!
