SQL Server 2017 and Direct Query

This may sound like an obvious question, but I'm looking for a definitive answer.

In a demo tenant, I currently have SQL Server 2017 CTP 2.1 installed along with the current version of the On-Premises Data Gateway. The data source has been configured and works with refresh.  Attempting to access this server with a Direct QUery connection results in an errr indicating that this data source isn't supported.

Can I assume that this is because SQL Server 2017 is still in preview, and that it will be fully supported by Direct Query at release?

@diverdown1964,

I test the scenario as yours, everything works in my environment. I can successfully connect to SQL Server 2017 CTP 2.1 using DirectQuery mode in the latest version of Power BI Desktop(2.46.4732.721 64-bit), and I can successfully add the data source under the on-premises gateway(14.16.6317.4).

What is the exact error message do you get? And do you get the error message in Power BI Service or Power BI Desktop?

Lydia Zhang

Thanks Lydia. Sure enough, I attempt to recreate the error to give you a screenshot, and I cant repeat it. It does all appear to be working. I had just upgraded the SQL Server from CTP 1.3, so it's possible the new version info hadn't gotten through at the time. It was happening in Desktop and service.

All good.
