Reconfiguring power bi gateway

Hi,

We had installed Power BI Gateway on premise server.

Now that server has been decomissionned and i have to resintall and reconfigure gatway on azure VM. I have gateway name and recovery key details. How can i go about that?

What changes i have to do to the data sets in the power BI service?

Please guide.

Hi @Anonymous,

We can consider the Gateway as a proxy. If the server that holds the Gateway can access the 2 different servers, you don't need to install the gateway on both servers.

It seems you'd like to change the settings on the Service side, I'm afraid you have to recreate them. Some parameters can't be changed. Please refer to the snapshot below.

Hi @Anonymous,

Usually, it will prompt if you'd like to create a new gateway or recover one in the first installation. You need to enter the gateway name and the recovery key. Please refer to service-gateway-onprem#migrate-restore-or-take-over-an-existing-gateway.

You don't need to change anything in the Service unless the connection details are changed. For instance, a local file source changes from driver D to driver E. Or the server name "localhost" can't be reached anymore.

Hi Dale,

Thanks for the response and it was helpful.

Scenario is, In my organisation we installed the power bi gateway on a server which is decomissioned.

Now there is new server. where i wanted to install the gateway and with the recovery key, i have installed it on a new server. Windows login with which it has been configured is still valid. Which measn, gateway perspective everything is fine.

But now data soucres is differet for that gateway. I want to change the datasouce for the existing gateway.

What is best way, i can change the data source?

If i have to read the data souce from the 2 different servers, do i need to install the gateway on both the 2 servers?
