Pro vs. Premium

I am still very confused about what Power BI product I need for my team. I have the Power BI desktop version and would like to publish and share reports with personnel that may not have Power BI in their machines. I tried going through the features for Professional and Premium and still very confused as I read that I need Power BI Pro for Premium to work correctly.

hi  @Anonymous

First, Power bi desktop is just a report development tool, it doesn't need any license, when you create a report and then publish it to power bi service, then share them in power bi service.

Second, for share report.

For normal, if you want to share a private report to others, you and others both need the Pro license.
If you have purchased Premium and add your content to Premium, then when you share the content, the receiver could be free user,

but Premium is more expensive.

Another way, you could publish report to web, then anyone could access it.

But When you use Publish to web, the report or visual you publish can be viewed by anyone on the Internet. There is no authentication used when viewing these reports. Only use Publish to web with reports and data that the anyone on the Internet (unauthenticated members of the public) should be able to see. This includes detail level data that is aggregated in your reports. Before publishing this report, ensure you have the right to share the data and visualizations publicly. Do not publish confidential or proprietary information. If in doubt, check your organization's policies before publishing.

Third, for more details of difference between Pro and Premium, you could refer these document:

Hey @Anonymous .

Pro licensing means that every user needs a Pro license, even if the user "just" consumes reports, that have been created by others.

Besides some additional features Premium means that people can access a Power BI App, created from the content of a workspace, without needing a Pro license. Each user who publishes a Power BI file (created with Power BI Desktop) to a Power BI workspace needs a Pro license.

This means for a small team, Premium just makes sense, if you want to use additional features. Here you will find a feature comparison: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/#powerbi-comparison-table

Here you will find a calculator: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/calculator/

Hopefully, this helps.

Regards,

Tom
