PowerBI Service Share Report endpoint throwing error 500

This is an issue reported by some of our PowerBI Pro users.

When trying to share an existing report in My Workspace with other users in the organization using the Share Report option, after entering first few characters of another user in "Grant Access to" textbox, the spinner icon shows up for a few seconds but no users are returned in the drop down list.

Investigating the issue using Chrome Developer tools shows the following request failing in the network tab:
Error returned: 500 (Internal Server Error)

Search for the same users is working for other users with the exact same permissions.

Our tenant is located in North Central US (Illinois).

Looks like a PowerBI Service bug?

Turns out this was caused because we did not have the required External Collaboration Settings enabled for guest users in Azure AD (as described here: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/azure-ad-b2b-guest-users-can-now-edit-and-manage-content-in...)

However, the 500 error is misleading and it would have helped if there was a more informative error response.
