PowerBI Hardware configuration

Hello everyone,

I need help with server configuration for PowerBi. I try to find something here, but found nothing to help me.

I got the task to calculate the costs of deploying PowerBI in our company. I basically understand license, but I'm not sure hardware configuration for server we would need and I need to include server costs.

So I have two main questions:

  1. With how many users is it good to switch from PRO to Premium?
  2. Server - hardware configuration - assumption is that we would have:
    • 250 users (in average 30 users at one moment)
    • 250 – 300 unique apps (more reports in one app)
    • Average app would have dataset with 5-7 mil rows
    • Biggest apps (7-10 aps) would have dataset with 400 mil rows

I hope I gave enough information and I wrote it clearly

Thank you for your answers

Hi, @Anonymous

According to your description, here is my opinion of your questions:

  1. I don’t think the number of users can be the real motivation for you to switch from PRO to Premium, because Power BI Premium is a capacity-based license, while Power BI Pro is a user-based license. Users can still have a Pro license in the Premium capacity. The biggest reason for purchasing the Premium for some companies is to meet the needs of data set size and data refresh performance(dedicated resources). Of course, the large number of users in a company can also be one of the reasons.
  2. You can check this document that gave some examples outline how customers can meet their BI needs using a combination of Power BI Pro and Power BI Premium:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/admin/service-premium-faq

This is a Premium calculator that can help you to find out what kind of Premium capacity you may need:

https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/calculator/

More detail of different kind of capacity nodes

Do you have your mind set on Power BI Report Server (on-prem) or would you also consider Power BI Premium (cloud based) ?

I think Power BI Report Server. Maybe in future Power BI Premum.
