PowerBI Gateway required for Azure SQL data refresh

Hello,

I've created report that downloads multiple datasets via SQL queries from single database hosted in Azure (PaaS). All are embeeded mode.  I also have few datasets from manual input (via Enter Data feature).

I published this report but PowerBI.com requires me to install gateway. Why is that? All my data is either entered manually or from Azure SQL.

I also created very small sample report (new file) where I added one exacly same query (copied via advanced editor) and one enter data set and after publish it doesn't require gateway. Is there something wrong with my file?

Note: I previously had some CSV loading sources in my query window but I removed them all and now I only see one azure sql on data source list.

Kind regards,
Adam.

1 ACCEPTED SOLUTION

All,

Yesterday I also submitted solution to this issue but it got removed. Not sure why thought.

The solution is: I had database FQDN <server_name>.database.secure.windows.net instead of <server_name>.database.windows.net for clients that support TDS 7.3 not 7.4. More here.... Removing .secure. part from FQDN solved my issue and I'm no longer asked to provide gateway.

Hey @GilbertQ actually it wasn't I had manual data entered in small proof of concept and it worked. Not sure why my solution from removed though.

Hi @v-shex-msft basically in short, I had Azure PaaS SQL (not VM; described in first post). I had manual input and azure SQL input connectors. I was prompted by Power BI com to provide gateway. All this because of incorrect database URL (FQDN).

Hi @AdamMarczak,

Can you share more detail information about your issue? I'm not so sure for your scenario.

For example:

Screenshots, datasource type, sample query.

BTW, for sql database which install in azure vm, it need a gateway to manage the refresh; for azure sql database, it not need gateway.

Hi there from my understanding it would be because you have manually entered the data?
