Power BI Premium – Additional Capacity options

Hi All,

Background

  • The client is on a Power BI P1 license

  • The client maximized the Power BI PI capacity.

  • Now the client is getting the “Set up the new Capacity” button (2) at the Power BI Admin portal

  • A new capacity is added named “MCPL Dedicated” (4) as shown below

  • There are lots of developments done under this capacity MCPL ABC DEDICATED (5) and they won’t like to lose the developments under this capacity.

  • Screenshot of new capacity which is empty MCPL Dedicated

  • Screenshot of existing Power BI capacity which is max out MCPL ABC DEDICATED

Challenges and queries

The client has some questions

  • Q1:  Client: What is the validity of this new extra P1 capacity?
    Consultant (myself):
I feel, besides the validity, it should be based on P1 capacity & its v-cores. Isn’t it?

  • Q2: Client: Can the client purchase a new Power BI P1 Premium and use it for this capacity MCPL ABC DEDICATED)?

  • Q3: Client: With the new purchase, the client doesn’t want to create a new capacity and use this capacity only i.e. MCPL ABC DEDICATED
    Consultant (myself):
    a) What options does the client has to “expand” the current capacity MCPL ABC DEDICATED)?
    b) If they move to Power BI Premium P2 Capacity or higher tier will  Power BI reports/dashboards developed in the past 6 months still be there?

Any input will be highly appreciated.

Hi  @aaroh_bits791 ,

1. As long as you don't delete it or the v-core doesn't expire, it will always exist.

2. You can go to AAD to buy, but the customer must at least be the tenant's billing admin.

3.

a. It is recommended to try to turn on autoscale:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/enterprise/service-premium-auto-scale

b. Power BI reports/dashboards still exist.

Best Regards,

Liu Yang

The client has some questions

<AB > Align with the answer of no expiration
  • Q2: Client: Can the client purchase a new Power BI P1 Premium and use it for this capacity MCPL ABC DEDICATED)?
<AB>As per my knowledge Capacity name is linked to a single capacity, so you may have 2 capacities under the same tenant ( P1 eg name Capacity A and a P2 name Capacity B) but not 2 differnet P1s named as same capacity. The option is to either upgarde the capacity to P2/P3 etc or Autoscale OR to create a new capacity and allocate some high consuming reports to that capacity)
<AB> They can either upgarde to a P2 or implement Autoscale as suggested by msft above!
    b) If they move to Power BI Premium P2 Capacity or higher tier will  Power BI reports/dashboards developed in the past 6 months still be there?  <AB> Yes they will remain
