Power BI Gateway Connections

I am pulling Data from SharePoint (O365) and am publishing into Power BI Web. While setting up the refresh schedule recently, Have noticed that “you don’t need a gateway for this dataset, because all off it data sources are in the cloud, but, you can use a gateway for enhanced control over how you connect”.  Now, Power BI is currently available as part of the Office 365 version (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt282164.aspx). Believe that we don’t need to have any separate gateway connection for refresh schedules going forward as long as both Power BI and SharePoint are in same/common O365 platform.

Please help with clarifications on the Power BI Gateway connections.

Hi @ulpillai,

The On-premises data gateway acts as a bridge, providing quick and secure data transfer between on-premises data (data that is not in the cloud) and the Power BI.

For your scenario, it seems that your data from SharePoint(O365) should be online data source, so you don't need to configure on-premises data gateway.

Actually, files on OneDrive, or SharePoint Online can be refreshed automatically.
