Power BI App creation restrictions?

Hi.

It is possible to restrict Power BI Pro users ability to create Content Packs in the Power BI Admin settings. But what about the new way of sharing content, via Apps. Do anyone know if it is possible to restrict which Power BI Pro users that are able to create Apps?

All users that need to consume reports via an App needs to be Pro users, but in our organisation we do not want all users to be able to create and share Apps. Our user base is not big enough for at Premium license model, which would have solved our problem as free users can not create Apps.

Can anyone help?

Regards,

magnus

Hi @MagnusM,

The functionality of app workspace remains on par with group workspaces for the most part. Apps are an evolution and simplification of content packs. Same as controlling the users' ability to create Content Packs, now you can still disable app creation in Admin Portal -> Tenant settings, you can see the content pack settings apply to content and app.

The users that have been prevented from creating and sharing Apps, they have access to the shared content from others. I think this could meet your requirement.

Thanks, I didn't see that this option now also applies to Apps.

Currently App workspaces are still tied to O365 Groups. You can currently disable this, and I would assume when they cut out O365 groups completely that they would allow you to do this differently.

If you disable the ability for users (or some users) to create App (Group) workspaces than the above issue is no longer a problem. You are not able to create or share an App from a personal workspace, it is a byproduct of the App Workspace (Group workspace)
